The Oldest Known VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72

Did you know that the oldest-known registered VW Bus is a Dove Blue panel van named Sofie that recently celebrated its 72nd birthday? In 1950, Sofie, now the oldest VW, was delivered brand spanking new to a buyer in Hildesheim, a city in the north of Germany that's not far from Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg. Sofie, The Oldest Known VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. It spent more than two decades delivering goods on the picturesque yet winding roads that meander through the region. Sofie, the oldest VW bus, changed hands several times from 1973 to 1992. Yet despite the change in ownership (or maybe because of it) Sofie's important role in automotive history was never mentioned much, if it even was known. Up until recently, it was simply an outdated cargo hauler that was not very popular with the average customer around the world. As the years went on, VW bus variants became sought after auto collector’s vehicles. Sofie eventually won the attention of a Danish collector who bought the bus sight-unseen after uncovering its chassis number build date. By that time the olden bus had not been on the road in nearly two decades. So the Danish buyer set about to bring Sofie back to her former glory. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. It was quite a project. Sofie underwent a three-year restoration and then spent years traveling around Europe to meet her fans (aka car enthusiasts). During that time Sofie also won several prizes at car shows. After unsuccessfully searching for the van's next buyer, the elderly Danish owner ended up selling it to Volkswagen in 2014. Sofie is now living a life of ease in the official VW collection. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. When not traveling to events, Sofie is often on display in one of the two VW museums in Wolfsburg. Sofie is powered by an air-cooled, 1.2-liter flat-four engine that churns out a whopping 25 horsepower at 3,300 rpm. The bus can reach a top speed of 60 mph on a straightaway. Like every pre-1955 VW bus, its engine lid extends from the back end to the belt line and it, therefore, has no rear hatch. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. We can expect to see more of Sofie as VW launches the ID buzz. The new high-tech ID buzz will take plenty of its styling cues from the 1950 original VW bus. But it will be electric, very high-tech and much quicker. And eventually, self-driving. Check out: The All-Electric ID. Buzz “VW Microbus” Will Be Worth the Wait. And Wait We Will…. Sofie could have lost her status as the oldest-known Type 2 by the time the ID Buzz launches. That's because another one that came out even earlier could emerge. Every single example of the VW bus built during the initial five months of production is currently missing, according to media reports. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. Yes, the Bus was mass-produced. But it was also "mass destroyed" over time as one media outlet put it. But it's possible one is still sitting moss covered in the forests of Germany or Austria, so you never know. It has one of the richest histories of any car on the planet. Volkswagen approved the Type 2 van for production on May 19, 1949. The first VW Bus left the Wolfsburg plant on the 12th of November that year. The more glass-lade “Microbus” joined the lineup in May 1950. And VW ended up building a total of 9,541 Types 2s in that first production year. The first-generation Microbus featured design characteristics that were unique to this model, according to Auto Trends website. These included a split aerodynamic windshield and some window variations. Standard models were equipped with 11 windows, Deluxe versions had 15 windows and Sunroof Deluxe models added eight small skylight windows for a total of 23 windows, according to Auto Trends. The first models also had removable middle- and rear-row seats, while later models had only a removable rear seat. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. After the original model’s 18-year run, the second-generation Volkswagen Microbus was unveiled, minus the split windshield, which was replaced by a single wraparound window. The window count dropped as well with only vent, side, sliding and rear windows featured. At that point, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 47 horsepower and paired with a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission was offered. Later on, a 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine making 65 horsepower was introduced, but imports to the United States were soon ended, according to Auto Trends. Volkswagen continued to manufacture the Volkswagen Microbus after leaving the US market, building the vehicle at plants located in Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia. A third-generation model was introduced in 1980, sold briefly as the Vanagon in the United States before high tariffs ended imports. By 2009 only the Brazilian plant was manufacturing the van and that model was based on the second-generation design with a water-cooled engine. After 78 consecutive years of building the rear-engine buses, VW announced the end of the Brazilian-manufactured Kombi. New environmental legislation had effectively killed the model. VW bus and production stopped in 2014. The Oldest VW Bus in the World Has Turned 72. Get ready for a comeback! The VW bus is about to return in the next year or so as an electric vehicle. Currently known as the ID. Buzz, the newest version of the microbus will offer 369 horsepower from electric motors on each axle. The original 1950 Type 2 sold in the United States had a mere 30 horsepower, making it very slow driving up hills. VW Bus Has Evolved Significantly Throughout the Years. Aston Martin is Getting a New Set of Wings: How a British Designer Breathed New Life into the Famous Winged Logo.

Aston Martin is known for luxurious, sporty design and powerful engines. So much so that the Aston Martin DB5 is literally considered the James Bond car by lovers of all things automotive and 007. Aston Martin's Seat Logo. And now, it seems, Aston Martin is getting a new set of wings on its logo rebrand. The British automaker recently hired famed graphic designer Peter Saville CBE to update its famous winged logo. Aston Martin's New Logo. His design changes are subtle and probably won’t overly upset those who loved the old logo. That's because the new logo respects the company’s heritage while at the same time bringing a fresh, modern look to it. The old Aston Martin logo featured a green gradient background and a semi-circular line. The old logos lines reflected the original Egyptian inspiration for the design but didn’t quite capture Aston Martin of today. Aston Martin 's Past Logo. Saville replaced those elements with a solid British racing green while thickening the lines of the new logo. It now appears bolder but also more streamlined and contemporary. The hope is that Aston Martin’s appeal will spread to younger and more international audience – while at the same time respecting the brand's heritage. “Every millimeter of each line – of each shape within the new wings, are drawn forward from the depths of our 109-year Aston Martin creative wellspring,” Aston Martin's executive vice president, Marek Reichman, told the media recently. The new Aston Martin logo will also be used in physical badges that will be made by well-known Birmingham silversmiths Vaughtons. Saville said his tweaks were "subtle but necessary” enhancements to the design that not only to keep the logo fresh but also to allow it to be applied to various formats and technologies in the future. So how did Aston Martin get those wings on its logo in the first place? Aston Martin's Back Logo. The new set of wings for the new logo, it turns out, has incorporated contemporary cues from each era of Aston Martin and has now evolved into an instantly recognizable icon worldwide. As Aston Martin launches its bold new brand identity, and updated iconic wings, the British automaker is taking a look at the early history of this iconic marque. 1920 Aston Martin's Interior Panel. Eager to build the fledgling Aston Martin brand, co-founder Lionel Martin didn't just aspire to compete with his rivals, he sought to make a different kind of car: a luxury sports car. With an interlocking 'A' and 'M' in dark green – a nod to British racing green – and its circular, button shape, the original logo was inspired by those of preeminent luxury car brands of the early 1920s. Simple yet sophisticated, the design was led by Lionel's wife, Kate Martin, and exuded elegance and style. 1921-1927 Aston Martin's Logo from 1921-1927. Except for the Coal Scuttle, the very first Aston Martin and a car raced by Kate herself, the logo was applied to every Aston Martin from 1920 to early 1927, including our first Grand Prix car, TT1, which after being sold by the team became affectionately known as 'Green Pea' owing to its color and Grand Prix – or 'GP' – racing heritage. The Roaring Twenties brought more than flapper dresses, frivolity and a cartoon mouse by the name of Mickey – the Aston Martin brand got its wings for the first time.Technological advances led to milestones in aviation that captured public imagination, such as the first non-stop transatlantic flight, and brands sought to capitalize on people's fascination with flying. Any car company with a link to aviation made it known and even those that didn't alluded to possible connections with the industry. 1927 Aston Martin's Logo in 1927. Motivated by this popular aviation trend, this year saw the introduction of the first iteration of the wings that would become synonymous with Aston Martin. The wings symbolized speed, and the 'A' and 'M' of the original logo were replaced with the company name – stylized so that the centrally positioned 'M' connected with the horizontal elements of 'T'. The designer remains a mystery to this day. Check our our latest! ASton martin inventory

The Ferrari Monza SP1 is one of the Most Incredible Supercars Money Can Buy – Nearly Two Million to Be Exact

The Ferrari Monza SP1 is already an icon in more ways than one. In fact, it's a showcase of the Italian automaker’s ‘Icona’ (Icon) concept Icona is where modern aesthetic is used to reinterpret a timeless style. The SP1 is a single-seater (while the nearly identical SP2 has two seats), with the driver's position situated to one side of the car. With an eye to the future, the SP1's technologically advanced components bring the highest performance possible thanks to continuous innovation. Only 499 will be built for some very special collectors - and they are already sold out. You May Also Like: They Said it Would Never Happen – but the Ferrari SUV is a Real Thing So let’s take a look at some of the incredible features that make the Ferrari Monza SP1 one of the greatest supercars of the past decades and why it sold out so quickly. The Engine The SP1's stunning bodywork is inspired by the 750 Monza and 860 Monza racing cars of the mid-1950s, referenced in the voluptuous front wing curves, those abrupt rear buttresses, and unusual seating. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine is front-mid-mounted and similar to that found in the Ferrari 812 Superfast but with 10 additional horsepower bringing the total to 801 horsepower and 530lb-ft of torque. It's a historical car – with a historical engine - that exists solely for you, the driver.  The SP1 comes with only one type of transmission, an F1 seven-speed dual-clutch system. With a curb weight of just under 3,310 lbs, you can get from zero to 60 in just 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph. It's a Work of Art It’s been called a car whose pure beauty looks “sculpted by the wind” and its styling elements are truly impressive. The aesthetic is futuristic but at the same time a respectful yet un-nostalgic homage to the past. Even the Monza SP1’s LED light units are a work of art – expressed as a slender light bar instead of quad round lenses at the rear. The turbine-spoke wheels are a fresh take that is not found on any other Ferrari model. Inside and out, Ferrari engineers succeeded beautifully in using a modern aesthetic to reinterpret a timeless style, all while including high-tech components and the highest performance possible The Virtual Windshield The Ferrari Monza SP1 has no windows or roof – and it also has no windshield. Instead, it has what the Italian automaker calls a "virtual windshield." Instead of a glass windshield or screen, Ferrari has developed an airflow system designed to carry out the same function of a windshield. As the car moves, air is sucked in through the intake at the front of the car, then channeled to an upwards-facing vent that's located in front of the driver's seat, creating the windshield-like barrier. It Only Has One Seat This is one of the most unique features on the SP1. Ferrari gave the car a single seat made of carbon fiber to keep weight at a minimum. To get into the car the driver lifts up a small door and hops over a sill before lowering himself/herself into the driver’s seat. Once inside you are ready for incredible driving thrills as you bask in the gorgeous leather upholstery. But don’t plan on bringing a friend! For that, you will need to invest in the two-seater SP2, which is almost identical. The idea to make an extreme car with a single seat is rooted deeply in Ferrari’s history. The Barchetta design is the basis for many of the automaker’s racing cars from the '50s, which look similar to the design of the Monza SP1. And that is exactly what the Ferrari designers had in mind. The Interior is a Classic The interior of the SP1 is based Upon the 812. Lovers of all things Ferrari will recognize it as being similar to the classic 812. In fact, it employs the same chassis as the stock 812 as well as an identical engine. You may also spot many similar mechanical components and the overall interior look is similar. Starting price: of $1.8 million. Discover our inventory: ferrari for sale

And that new engine will now be located behind the driver. Aston Martin says it plans to introduce three mid-engine models, which include the next generation of the Vanquish.  Moreover, writers at Autocar confirm that the Vanquish will eschew the originally planned in-house V6 in favor of AMG power. The Lamborghini Urus is Making Headlines - Why do Celebrities Love this SUV Hypercar So Much?

The Lamborghini Urus seems to be popping up in celebrity news quite a bit these days. With headlines like: Kim Kardashian rocks a casual look with a black halter top and ripped jeans as she fills up her Lamborghini Urus at the pump And: Ben Affleck’s 10-Year-Old Son Accidentally Backed a $225,000 Lamborghini URUS Into a BMW. Ouch. That’s right. The big names are driving the Urus. And getting attention. And America, it seems, is riveted. For instance, Kim Kardashian looking cool and casual recently as she pumped some gas into her famously gray Lamborghini Urus grabbed gazillions of clicks all over the media. You may even recall that she then stopped at a nearby McDonald's for a quick meal before heading on her way in her Urus. Of course the tabloids were more focused on what she was wearing (a halter top) and who she was with (nobody) than the car. But there’s a reason Kim, who could buy any car in the world, chose a Lamborghini Urus. The 2022 Lamborghini Urus is an exotic high-performance SUV worthy of A-listers and VIPs. So what actually happened with Ben Affleck? It turns out his 10-year-old Samuel Garner Affleck—Ben and ex-wife Jennifer Garner's son—somehow ended up in the driver's seat of a yellow Lamborghini Urus. While visiting a dealership in Los Angeles with Ben and mom, Sam got in the driver's seat and put the car in reverse, hitting the BMW parked behind him. Super ouch. Luckily, no one was hurt. The iX1, BMW's Most Affordable All- Electric SUV Ever, is Coming in 2023!

The 2023 BMW iX1 is coming. And you can expect it to be an affordable all-electric SUV and have a driving range of close to 300 miles. BMW has only released a spy-pic image of its electric-powered iX1 SUV. The iX1 is intended as a relatively affordable, practical electric vehicle. With the iX1 BMW is offering an electric SUV that many families will find within reach and highly practical. The new iX1 will be the entry level SUV for the Munich-based automaker’s electric SUV range. It will be linked to the latest generation of ICE-powered X1, which is due to make its debut at the end of this year. more The latest image released by the German carmaker shows traditional BMW styling along with some newer design cues. For instance, the iconic BMW kidney grille is more square with more compact dimensions than the new BMW i7 and iX. Additionally, there’s a new blue trim line surrounding those dimensions that’s akin to those on the i3. What's more you can expect the trademark dual headlight design used on most BMW models. Check Out: BMW’s Innovative Gesture Control Technology Sets the Industry Standard The current X1 range received a facelift three years ago - so this is a natural evolution of sorts. Specifications for the iX1 have not yet been confirmed to the public but you can expect it to be a reworked version of the X1’s current UKL platform. The BMW iX1 is likely to feature the company’s next-generation EV system and is expected to work with a 210kW motor as required. The battery technology should allow EV’s range be beyond198 miles. The iX1 will employ the “Power of Choice” of the next 5 Series and 7 Series. That means that along with the EV there will likely be gas- and diesel-powered mild-hybrid options, plus a plug-in hybrid model. It could be close in appearance to the new X1, with the only noticeable differences being a slightly reworked radiator grille and re-shaped rear valance that removes the unneeded exhaust cutout. The spy pics suggest the production iX1 could have a couple of blue highlights as well as aerodynamic alloy wheels. Best of all: It will have its own unique badges to signal its eco-friendly status. It’s all part of BMW’s stated goal of lowering its supply chain CO2 emissions in 2030 by 20 percent over 2019. That means a full 80 percent drop in emissions from its factories and other facilities by the same year. BMW plans to deliver 2 million fully electric vehicles to the worldwide market by the end of 2025. And five years after that it intends to have a minimum of 50 percent of its global deliveries to be BEVs. Although only a little has been confirmed about the iX1, we do know that it will drive close to 300 miles on a single charge. And it will integrate BMW’s s fifth-generation eDrive technology. Here’s everything else we know about the 2023 BMW iX1 at this time: xDrive will be offered via two electric motors  and some version will have a single motor. The iX1 will be joined by a gasoline- and diesel-fueled X1 models as well as a plug-in hybrid variant. Charging the iX1 via an AC charger can be done at up to 22 kW - while DC fast charging won't go any higher than 127 kW. The new iX1 - as well as the X1 it’s based on - feature BMW’s very latest design language, with headlights that strongly swoop around the corners of the front fascia. There’s very bold blade-style rear light clusters that give the vehicle a wide stance and plenty of presence. All of the models will look similar and the crossover with conventional powertrains will share the same platform with the EV, allowing it to mirror the relationship between the new 7 Series and i7. The zero-emissions iX1 model won’t be the only addition to the range; there will also be an M Performance X1 M35i that comes with quad exhaust tips. It accelerates from standstill to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 112 mph. Check out our latest: BMW for sale
